Hinault with Help from LeMond Beats Moser
The 1985 Giro d’Italia marked the third participation and third Giro victory for French superstar Bernard Hinault. The GC battle was between 1984 Giro champion Francesco Moser and Hinault.
Young American Greg LeMond provided his La Vie Claire teammate Hinault with excellent support from start to finish. Moser tried every move possible, but Hinault, LeMond and a powerful La Vie Claire team controlled every attack. Hinault's time trialing ability proved to be the difference.
Bernard Hinault rolled across the final stage finish line in Lucca to claim a 1’08” Giro d’Italia victory over Francesco Moser.
SPECIAL NOTE: 7-Eleven’s Ron Kiefel became the first American to win a stage in the Giro d’Italia on Stage 15 from L'Aquila to Perugia (208 km).
